#3 Myth or Misconception:
"To Have a Perfect Group Portrait, Everyone Must Have Good Expressions At The Same Instant The Photograph Is Taken."
Back in the film days, this was true. However, now that we are well into the high-resolution digital age, a lot of things can be done after the images are created to correct or enhance the photo. The more people there in a group, the more likely we will need to do "head swaps", where we take someone’s face from one image where they look great but others may not and transpose that person into a second similar image where everyone else looks their best.
In fact, this has become rather common for us to do in our quest for creating the perfect portrait of your family that everyone will love. No more compromising one person for the greater good of the group! Knowing head swapping may be needed is why we take plenty of photographs of the group so we will have ample "donor" images available. This greatly improves the probably of getting at least one good image of even the most wiggly two year old. (And, no, you cannot tell any transplant surgery has been preformed in the final image!)
Expanding on these technological possibilities, we have on several occasions added missing people to a group photograph who were unable to be present for the anniversary or family reunion portrait. As long as we can later photograph them in the same or similar lighting, we just leave space for them to be added when creating the group portrait. How cool is that! Does that open up some new possibilities for you?
#4 Myth Or Misconception:
"Family Portraits Are Created In A Boring Studio."
If you're like most people, when you think of a PROFESSIONAL family portrait, you think of all of you gathered in front of a painted background in a photography studio, posed unnaturally, and all saying "cheese" as the photographer snaps the picture. Now, is that something any family will cherish for a lifetime? I think not.
Picture instead: All of you gathered out in a beautiful, secluded spot in the forest or by the lake or even on your boat. Or maybe in your favorite room in your home, outside on your deck.or in your backyard. All of you are dressed in clothes the photographer helped you chose - clothing that conveys your individual personalities, but still looks great together. Well, that's what makes all the difference, and that's what I will do for you.
And this is SO important: all of you feel totally comfortable in front of the camera!
Do you know ANYONE who feels totally comfortable in front of a camera? I don't. Nearly everyone I've ever met tells me the same thing: "I never look natural in pictures." The last thing you want is a photograph where you have that fake "posed" look on your face.
That's why it's so important that you feel very natural and comfortable with your photographer. Just think of how great your family would look if your best friend was creating the photograph. They would all look so happy and natural! I enjoy developing close relationships with all my clients.
Plus, I understand the "psychology" of photography. Learning the technical aspects - what lenses to use, what lighting looks best, how clothing adds and subtracts weight in photographs - all of those things were only the tip of the iceberg. Without being able to make each one of your family members look and feel comfortable and natural, all those technical things would amount to nothing.
